EPR for Battery Waste: How the 2025 Amendments are Changing Compliance for EV Manufacturers

 With rising fuel costs, an increase in demand for eco-friendly mobility, and government incentives, the electric vehicle (EV) business in India is at its peak. However, with this boom comes the biggest dilemma: dealing with used batteries in an environmentally sound manner. For this purpose, the Government of India fortified its regulatory frameworks under the amendment to the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2025 , to introduce a strong EPR for Battery Waste system. The new provisions are set to change the compliance landscape for EV manufacturers and other associated players. What is EPR for Battery Waste? The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Battery Waste now specifies that all producers, importers, and brand owners are obliged to collect, recycle, and dispose of batteries after the end of their life.
